Arianna Lombardi’s interview

Hi Arianna, please introduce yourself to our readers!

My name is Arianna Lombardi, of a certain age, living in Livorno. I am a yoga and Pilates teacher! I have a passion for nature, gardening, and I run an Instagram page where I promote natural cooking and a health-focused lifestyle. Occasionally, I also get to embrace the joys of being a grandmother… occasionally!

What was the reason you decided to adopt a vegetarian diet? Can you tell us about your journey?

The journey began when I started practicing yoga, almost 30 years ago. It’s impossible to practice this discipline and not have an ethical and health-conscious sensitivity.

Then, I had some health issues and by stopping eating foods of animal origin, as if by magic, I healed. So… why not? And so, I became a vegetarian! But my next goal is to embrace veganism!

Was there any food that was particularly difficult for you to eliminate?

Yes! When I was eating meat, I said I would never be able to eliminate ham. But little by little, having to remove it for my condition, I managed! Do you know the funny thing? That if I taste a food that I loved, after a long time, I could find more flaws than virtues in it!

Where do you get the inspiration for the beautiful dishes you create? Do you follow the seasonality of the ingredients?

Always follow the seasonality of the ingredients! Because our body needs to recognize itself in the different seasons, our body needs different foods in each season, it is fundamental for our wellbeing.

The recipes I propose are almost all my own ideas, I really like Asian cuisine and I think my recipes are a mix of various culinary cultures, I would call it fusion cuisine!

Have you ever thought about going vegan?

Of course, as I mentioned before, it is my goal! Because I find veganism to be an ethical philosophy and a way to feed ourselves with essential, fresh products, in fact, I’ll tell you that I’m also fascinated by raw foodism and for now, I practice it only during the summer period.

Is there any food that you think is very important in our diet?

There are many foods that are good for us and that we need: whole grains, fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables, dried fruits, oilseeds, for me also soy derivatives (tofu, tempeh, natto…)

There are many conflicting opinions about soy, I believe that used in the right way, not in excessive quantities, it provides significant proteins, moreover, in the menopause phase, it is an ally, because it contains natural phytoestrogens.

What are your thoughts on superfoods? Why are they important?

I love superfoods, especially sprouts and microgreens. In Italy, they are slowly entering our diets, but around the world, they have been used very much for many years. These little living creatures provide vitamins, proteins, minerals, amino acids… and also add a touch of joy to our dishes.

I produce them at home, it’s very easy!

Besides nutrition, has this change impacted other aspects of your life?

Certainly, when you embark on a path of change, this also encompasses other spheres of our life. For example, I recycle many things, from food to clothing to various objects, giving new life to existing objects.

I try to use water and heating judiciously… in short, I try to make a small contribution in this era of great transition…

Do you feel better since you decided to live a healthier life?

Yes! I feel blessed! to have become aware that we can live with much less and better, both in terms of nutrition and the lifestyle I lead.

I have a beautiful garden where I produce most of the vegetables I eat, I produce an exceptional organic extra virgin olive oil, I often live in my Siberian yurt and when I’m there, I feel like the richest person on the planet… I love the essentials!

Do you have any suggestions and advice for those who are thinking of embarking on this journey?

Mostly to young people, because they will be our future: think for yourselves, respect men, animals, nature, do not follow fashions, but try to live a life with more values, true wealth is not in having a lot of money, but in having more time to cultivate our affections and what we like to do most!
